“Prompts (for college graduates who’ve forgotten how to write.)” Graciela Barada, (2020)

June 22, 2020

Write about the first puzzle you ever completed. Write about the songs of your childhood. Write about your last papercut. Write about the moon. Write about the time you broke your own heart. Write about forgiveness. Write about patience and the times no one was enough for you. Write about the times you were full. Write about the splinters and the porch bench you never fixed because ‘there’s always tomorrow.’ Write about your grandfather and the color of his handkerchief. Write about your brother and his first tie. Write about the sounds you make when you’re tired. Write about where you go in the moments before sleep. Write about your posture when no one’s looking. Write about the anxiety of bus rides when everyone’s looking. Write about your best friends. Write about the times they held your hand. Write about the friends you’ve lost. Write about the parts of them you never understood. Write about your mother and her worry. Write about her joy too. Write about your father and the pieces of him you refuse to see in yourself. Write about your sister’s worst breakup and the way she sobbed into your neck. Write about finding yourself in her smile. Write about how you’ve never been in love. Write about envy and self-destruction. Write about healing. Write about peace of mind. Write about the lovers you never knew how to hold. Write about sunsets and empty roads and nostalgia. Write about the little things you’ve always loved. Write about why they’re not so little. Write about your father’s past, the one you’ll never really know. Write about your mother’s pain, the one she’s not yet met. Write about your sorrow and the way it drives your passion. Write about your desire for freedom. Write about freedom. Write about your ridiculous laughter. Write about the photographs you’ll never be in. Write about the dresses you’ll never fit into. Write about the dresses you love. Write about the darkest place you’ve been and tell it, Thank you. Write about courage. Write about gratitude. Write about tomorrow. Write about today.
